Why Socially Responsible Computing?
As the role of technology increases in nearly every area of life, the work of computer scientists can increasingly exacerbate systems of social inequity.
The SRC program strives to make socially responsible computing an integral part of computer science education. We work to reimagine teaching in CS to expose future engineers to the ethical and political challenges and the social impacts of modern digital technology at every point of their journey towards a CS degree, and to provide them with the tools to reason critically about those challenges.
Our approach
The Brown CS Socially Responsible Computing (SRC) Program puts socially responsible computing front and center in computer science education. We integrate social, ethical, and political context into technical learning so that students can connect abstract values to concrete design decisions, understand how computing choices can function as policy, and develop the critical tools needed to build technology that is more just, accountable, and responsive to the people it affects.
